The first known ancestor of this line was born in Scotland or Ireland about 1690. He married Elizabeth Hainan 19 June 1714. They were both of Rathfryland, County Down, Ireland. They were married at the house of Robert Wilson. They were members of the Society of Friends.
Thomas dropped the final letter "g" from his name in order to distinguish it from that of a neighbor named McClurg. He afterward expressed regret for having mutilated the name, and advised his children to restore the letter to their name upon attaining their majority. Some of his descendants did so, while others omit the letter to this day. We will record the name in this record as each family writes it.
Thomas and wife moved from Rathfyland to Moate, County West Meath, Ireland and thence to Pennsylvania, U.S.A. they were granted a certificate of dismission from Moate Monthly Meeting dated 11 Mar 1729. The same was received by New Garden Monthly Meeting 29 June 1729. Thomas McClun and family are reported 30 June 1729 as being settled within the limits of Concord Monthly Meeting to which a certificate was signed 28 Jan 1730; Concordville, Delaware Co., PA.
Thomas moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania by 1741. His daughter, Sarah was married in Leacock Twp. 18 Apr 1741/2. Thomas was reported as deceased at that time. His widow, Elizabeth, remarried 11 June 1745 out of meeting as it was reported that she was married by a priest. (See Lancaster Co., PA Church Records of the 18th Century - for marriages of the widow and children.
